The ingenuity of criminals knows no bounds. As a result of the coronavirus outbreak the Government announced a VAT deferral for business for payments due between March and June 2020 until March 2021.
We would like to warn you that there is currently a scam email in circulation purporting to be from HMRC with convincing HMRC graphics and logo beginning “Dear customers, Your request for a deferral of VAT payments due to coronavirus (COVID-19) has been rejected… Summary of reject justification: the claimant is in arrears.”
The email then contains a link and a one time password that it encourages users to follow. The purpose of the email is to persuade the email recipients to release sensitive bank information.
This is just the latest in an ever more complex number of emails, letters, texts and telephone calls and we remind everyone to be extremely vigilant. If you have any doubts about any communications from HMRC always speak to your accountant first.
