Tax Trainee – Newbury Office

Are you a school or college leaver with excellent GCSE and A level results? Would you like to work in a prestigious local accountancy firm that is part of a top 20 group of accountancy practices? If so, we have a great opportunity for a Tax Trainee in our Tax Compliance and Advisory Team in Newbury. This role is the ideal place to develop an early grounding in this varied and interesting area of work.
You will learn about the UK tax system, in England and Wales, how different taxes are computed, the reliefs that reduce them and how they are administered. This will be supported by a study package to support you to achieve the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) qualification.

In 2024, the UK tax system is set to be digitalised, being the single biggest modernisation of UK taxation administration in over 20 years. You will be motivated to work in a team that will advise clients on how to prepare for these significant changes.

The role will include:

  • Self-manage a small portfolio of clients including owners of Private companies, HNWI’s, Partnerships and Trusts, under the guide of the firm’s tax consultants and manager
  • Request and collate information
  • Prepare and submit self-assessments for clients
  • Advise payment amounts and deadlines
  • Maintain client relations through email and telephone contact, support others in client meetings
  • Correspond with HMRC concerning routine tax matters (i.e. tax codes, checking repayments / tax calculations), complex tax cases and dealing with HMRC enquiries
  • Assist in the administration of client invoicing
  • Undertake to study for the first level of exams with full support provided after your first year of work
  • Develop understanding of Money Laundering Regulations, General Data Protection and workplace Equality, inclusion and diversity

Person Specifications Experience/Skills

  • No prior accountancy or tax experience is required for this entry level role, although evidence of some work experience would be an advantage
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated, team player
  • A level grades B or above
  • GCSE grade B or above in Maths and English
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Package comfortably
  • Good IT capabilities

AAT Trainee x2 – Newbury Office and Swindon Office

Are you a school or college leaver with excellent GCSE results? Would you like to work in an industry with excellent training to develop your career and gain professional accountancy qualifications? If so, we have 2 great opportunities: one at our Newbury practice, one at our Swindon practice, for an AAT Accounts Trainee.

As a Trainee you will learn to prepare sole trader, partnership and small limited company accounts, alongside draft tax computations for income and corporation tax. In addition, your development will involve managing a portfolio of VAT and bookkeeping clients. Alongside this you will be supported to gain your AAT qualifications.

The role will include:

  • Preparation of accounts from client’s prime records to a draft stage using accounting software (Digita Accounts Production)
  • Drafting business tax computations and preparing draft CT600s
  • Bookkeeping for clients using spreadsheets or cloud accounting software such as Sage, Xero and QuickBooks
  • Preparation of management accounts
  • Preparation of submission of VAT returns
  • Answering client phone calls / emails and helping with queries
  • Time management and prioritising urgent work
  • Complete timesheets on a weekly basis
  • Develop and apply technical knowledge gained from studies and on the job experience
  • Build and maintain professional working relationships with clients and other members of staff
  • Reception cover when required.

Applicants will have:

  • No accountancy experience required

Audit Senior – Abingdon Office

We are keen to hear from Audit Seniors in the Abingdon area. The audit senior will undertake statutory audit work for a range of limited companies and charities, taking responsibility for the file prior to review by the Director.

This role would suit an already experienced Audit Senior looking for a new challenge.

This role will include:

  • Preparation of statutory accounts for limited companies, partnerships and sole traders
  • Audit of accounts in accordance with ISAs, including attendance at client premises
  • Liaise with clients to ensure accounts comply with accounting standards
  • Draft corporation tax computations, including analysis of items for tax
  • Support the development of trainees in a clear and concise manner, identify and solve knowledge gaps

Accounts Senior x2 – Newbury Office

Due to our continued growth and success, an exciting opportunity has become available for two Accounts Seniors based in our Newbury office.

The Accounts Senior will work with Client Managers and Directors to deliver accounting and technical support with a focus on VAT and management accounts to a range of limited companies, partnerships and sole traders. They will support the development of Accounts Trainees and other junior staff as appropriate.

The role will include:

  • Preparation of VAT returns for clients and assisting clients with book-keeping and management information
  • Review of VAT returns prepared by more junior members of staff
  • Researching VAT issues and update staff on any changes in legislation etc changes involving VAT Making Tax Digital and other developments
  • Preparation of monthly and quarterly management accounts
  • Provide accounting software training and supporting clients with accounting software issues
  • Support Client Managers and Directors with the delivery of technical knowledge
  • Mentor and support the development of Trainees in a clear and concise manner, identify and solve knowledge gaps
  • Preparation of year end accounts for small limited companies, partnerships and sole traders
  • Draft corporation and income tax computations.

Applicants will have:

  • Essential: AAT or qualified by experience

  • Essential: A minimum of two years relevant experience
