If you run a business as a sole trader, the way you report tax to HMRC will soon change.
Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, many self employed individuals will need to switch to digital record keeping and quarterly reporting.
The first phase begins in April 2026.
Do sole traders need to join Making Tax Digital?
You will need to follow the new MTD rules if your total business and property income exceeds £50,000.
The threshold will reduce over time:
- £50,000 from April 2026
- £30,000 from April 2027
- £20,000 from April 2028
This means a large number of sole traders will eventually be affected.
What changes under Making Tax Digital?
The current Self Assessment system involves submitting one tax return each year.
MTD introduces a more regular reporting process.
Sole traders will need to:
- maintain digital business records
- submit quarterly updates to HMRC
- use MTD compatible accounting software
- complete a final year end declaration.
For many businesses this will require new bookkeeping processes.
Why many sole traders are starting to prepare now
Switching to digital record keeping takes time.
Business owners often need to:
- select suitable accounting software
- organise income and expense records
- learn how quarterly submissions work.
Starting early helps avoid problems when the rules take effect.
