I am sure that I am not the only one to be perturbed by the news that taxpayers who have overpaid tax will now have to actually request repayment of their tax.

Where PAYE taxpayers have overpaid tax for 2023/24 HMRC will issue a statement of account showing either a repayment or tax due.
Previously, where a repayment was due, the taxpayer could claim the repayment online, but where that was not done within 21 days, HMRC would issue a cheque to the taxpayer anyway.
Going forward, taxpayers will either need to claim their repayment online or call HMRC by telephone (good luck with that!). Simply waiting for an envelope to drop through the door is no longer an option.
Is that progress?
