When I left school in June 2021, I had a place to study Accounting and Finance at Exeter University. In my gap year after my A-levels I decided to gain some experience of working in an accounting firm, which would give me a much better understanding of the course and set me apart from others when I graduated.
Training to be an ACA qualified accountant
I contacted UHY Ross Brooke and was fortunate enough to be employed as an Accounts Assistant in October 2021. This involved helping with office admin and preparing statutory accounts and VAT returns. It was a steep learning curve, but I really enjoyed it, and in hindsight it was the best decision I’ve ever made. After my placement ended, I was offered a full-time role at UHY Ross Brooke working towards my ACA qualification, without going to University.

In Abingdon, the team is really friendly, and everyone is more than happy to help, including the other apprentices. I enjoy passing my knowledge onto others whenever I can, particularly the new graduates and apprentices. We frequently meet for charity quiz nights and social events and it’s great to have this friendship with colleagues outside the office.
Alex’s aspiration for the future
I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given by UHY Ross Brooke, and I am excited for the next 3 years as I continue to progress in my studies. So far I have passed 4 exams, and hopefully by Christmas 2023 I will have completed the Certificate Level.
