Despite overall static retail sales in the period, according to a survey by the British Retail Consortium, a record amount of shopping was performed online in December, with a staggering increase of almost 20% over the previous year.

The rise was attributed to both increased use of smart phones and tablet devices by consumers and the extra investment in websites and multi-media channels by the retailers.

Notably Morrisons without an online offering struggled over the Christmas period. Their home delivery is now set to be launched, albeit over 10 years behind their rivals Tesco.

The rise of the internet certainly seems to continue with no sign of slowing down at the expense of the High Street trader.
